In 1991, the Ukrainian sugar industry produced some 2.5 million tons of sugar beet molasses. Because of its outstanding quality (Brix up to 80% and sugar content up to 50%), Ukrainian molasses, the by-product of beet sugar production has always been in demand on the international market. It is widely used worldwide to produce animal feed, citric acid, monosodium glutamate, yeast, alcohol, bio fuels and other products.
The Food Raw Materials Supply Company, "Ukrpischesbytsyryo" began the construction of the Molasses Terminal in 1991 on the bank of the Dnepro-Bougsky Estuary, 10 kilometers to the south of the city of Nikolaev, Ukraine.
The American equipment and technology, as well as the high quality of the construction, contributed to the creation of the modern Molasses Terminal. From its start-up on June 9, 1994, it has proven to be one of the best in Europe of its branch.
Currently, the Molasses Terminal has a storage capacity of 25,000 cubic meters. These reservoirs are similar to thermoses-insulated outside and equipped with heating coils inside. This helps to automatically maintain the storage temperature of molasses at 28 degrees centigrade.
The Molasses Terminal is capable of discharging up to 2,000 tons of molasses from the tank cars. Up to 700 tons of molasses an hour can be loaded on a vessel, on a year-round basis.
The maximum draught of a vessel the Molasses Terminal can handle is limited to the draught of the Dnepro-Bougsky Estuary Channel - 9.8 meters.
More than 90 Ukrainian companies have shipped their molasses through the terminal to 30 ports in 16 countries worldwide.
